Utilities and Power
Rushmore Electric Power Cooperative supplies electricity to 56,000 customers throughout South Dakota, and it also supplies power cooperatives and agencies with GIS mapping and engineering services. Because of increasing demand for its engineering services and 10 percent annual data growth, Rushmore Electric needed to maximize efficiency. To meet its requirements, the company deployed a Dell EMC PowerProtect X400 appliance, a software-defined data management solution for protecting, managing and recovering data. Rushmore uses the X400 appliance to protect its file servers, Microsoft Exchange, and SQL Server databases for GIS maps of grids, power poles and other infrastructure elements. The organization’s PowerProtect environment is virtualized with more than 80 VMware vCenter virtual machines. Now, Rushmore can set up backups in four clicks instead of 30, and it saves $100,000 annually by avoiding upgrades. Additionally, the company has cut backup troubleshooting times from 3 hours to 15 minutes, and it can recover virtual SQL Server database in under two minutes.
“The PowerProtect X400 appliance scale-up and scale-out form factor is a perfect fit for both our current and future data management requirements.”
– Sean Crooks, Systems Administrator, Rushmore Electric
