Digiplug and flash storage: DELL EMC has always been there for usLearn more about XtremIO Flash storage
Revolutionary flash technology is something that a company delivering multimedia files to hundreds of streaming platforms around the world can't afford to miss out on. That's why France-based Digiplug, a long-standing DELL EMC customer, chose scale-out all-flash DELL EMC XtremIO technology to improve the performance levels of its production databases as well as its test environments.
With DELL EMC XtremIO flash storage, Digiplug has realized significant benefits across its operations. For a start, performance has significantly increased and reporting is faster. And, with automated workflows testing staff no longer have to manage complex IT procedures manually. Access to user interfaces and speed of navigation is now also quicker. Plus, with DELL EMC as a partner, the firm has confidence in meeting its service-level agreements with ease.

A BIG TASK TO TACKLE BIG VOLUME
Digiplug provides Software as a Service (SaaS) platforms that allow it to act as an intermediary between content owners, such as record companies, and a network of distributors. The volume of data involved in this is huge. For a master entry file, there are dozens, sometimes even hundreds of files that Digiplug makes available to its partner distributors. In addition to these, there are metadata files that describe the products—for example, artists, album, and year—as well as prices and details of distribution campaigns.
Dealing with these sorts of volumes is a major undertaking, requiring the latest technology. Digiplug uses both DELL EMC Isilon® network-attached storage and DELL EMC VNX® unified storage. "To store the large volumes of media we handle every day, we have Isilon network-attached storage. It's a scale-out solution that's made it possible for us to achieve an accurate match between our storage capacities and business operations," says Wilfrid Allembrand, Technical Head at Digiplug. "Then, we use VNX to host our production database environments through a storage area network. All of this is backed up by DELL EMC support teams."
FLASH STORAGE - THE CORE OF PERFORMANCE
Digiplug most recently adopted DELL EMC XtremIO flash storage. "The proof of concept we embarked on using XtremIO was aimed at our database issues," says Allembrand. "We wanted to improve performance and push the business forward, and XtremIO delivered. Not only did it live up to our expectations in terms of performance, but we also found it very easy to use. There was no special setup or configuration to be done—either for storage operations or business applications."
"From a business point of view, we have far more confidence, especially in terms of our service-level agreements. We know we can continue to expand our business activity without putting our contractual commitments at risk. DELL EMC has always been there for us and that in itself gives us confidence."

FLASH TECHNOLOGY ENABLES AUTOMATED WORKFLOW
In addition to looking at its production infrastructure, Digiplug also wanted to address issues in development testing. Here, too, XtremIO flash technology was decisive. The test teams wanted to carry out testing on environments as close as possible to production, but it was complicated to clone these environments. The existing workflow—which consisted of backup, transfer, restore, and cleaning of databases—took between one and two weeks.
"Before XtremIO, the situation wasn't sustainable. We needed a solution that would allow us to improve our test processes and reduce time to market," says Allembrand. Allembrand and his team saw demonstrations of snapshot technology on XtremIO. "We could see that this technology corresponded perfectly to our needs. After a few tests, the functional facilities were transformed into actual production. Since then, workflow has been entirely automated thanks to a range of scripts and APIs provided by XtremIO," says Allembrand.
DELL EMC GIVES US CONFIDENCE
Digiplug has seen multiple benefits with its DELL EMC flash technologies. "We quickly observed significant gains in performance at the level of our production platforms—and that was without any modification to the code. All back-end processes are also far quicker, and access to user interfaces has been improved, with faster navigation, searches, and data loading. Reporting has been shortened from a few days to a few minutes," says Allembrand.
These improvements are having a direct effect on Digiplug's business. According to Allembrand, "From a business point of view, we have far more confidence, especially in terms of our service-level agreements. We know we can continue to expand our business activity without putting our contractual commitments at risk. DELL EMC has always been there for us and that in itself gives us confidence."
