    • The DD9800 is 7x more scalable, 1.5x faster and can support 5x more streams than the nearest competitor

    Hopkinton, Mass. - October 11, 2016 -

Dell EMC is unveiling new software and a new generation of Dell EMC Data Domain protection storage systems that are flash-enabled to deliver industry-leading speed and scalability as well as enhanced protection for virtual environments. These new systems also provide the ultimate in efficiency for tiering long-term retention data to the cloud.

The deployment of the new Data Domain Cloud Tier software within Data Domain increases the total volume of data that can be managed through a single appliance by 200 percent, with a maximum logical capacity of 150PB. Data Domain Cloud Tier establishes Data Domain as the only protection storage to natively tier de-duplicated data to public, private, or hybrid clouds for long-term retention, including Dell EMC Elastic Cloud Storage and Virtustream Storage Cloud.

The new Data Domain family features four new models: DD6300, DD6800, DD9300 and DD9800. The DD6300 is a turnkey, all-in-one appliance designed specifically for small and midrange customers. The DD6800, DD9300 and DD9800 expand the capacity and features such as high availability to minimize downtime and ensure business continuity in the face of a sudden hardware failure. The DD9800 is 7x more scalable, 1.5x faster and can support 5x more streams than the nearest competitor.

The added power of flash is also enhancing the experience for users in virtual environments. In conjunction with Dell EMC Avamar software, the new family of Data Domain appliances can access protection instances of virtual machines (VMs) 20x faster. Customers are able to boot up VMs using a protection copy of the virtual machine files (VMDKs) directly from Data Domain instead of needing to restore the VM to a separate primary storage system.

“Protecting the modern data center is a critical pillar of any IT transformation strategy,” said Beth Phalen, SVP and GM, data protection solutions, Dell EMC. “Business Agility requires customers to protect rapidly growing data sets and minimize downtime no matter what happens in their data centers. To meet these needs we are introducing four new Data Domain systems with integrated flash technology that deliver new levels of scale and performance, allow customers to instantly restore large application environments and further reduce the time it takes to protect large volumes of data. Our data protection everywhere strategy ensures data is protected – affordably and securely – no matter where it lives.”

    Data Domain OS 6.0

The new Data Domain family of appliances is powered by the next generation of the Data Domain operating system, DD OS 6.0. In addition to the introduction of Data Domain Cloud Tier, DD OS 6.0 delivers new advanced integration with Hadoop, via the Dell EMC Data Protection Suite for Applications, an industry-unique solution to deliver enterprise grade protection of big data.

Anthony Gizzarelli, senior manager, backup and recovery operations and engineering, AIG

“Protection storage is every bit as important to us as primary storage so we have relied on Dell EMC Data Domain for many years. As the volumes of data that we manage grow, being able to tier data intelligently to more cost-efficient targets, such as the cloud, becomes more important to us. However, should anything happen, we need to access our protection data fast so we’re excited by new features, such as high availability and being able to run VMs direct from the protection storage instance.”

    Analyst Quote:

Jason Buffington, principal analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group

“This week’s announcement reminds us all why Data Domain continues to be the dominant solution in protection storage today. Data protection has always been about the ‘race to zero’ in recovery time, while balancing cost to performance in the solution overall. Between the VM-scenario enhancements, the addition of cloud-tier as an extension of the protection storage, and acceleration via its flash tier, Dell EMC is pulling all the levers that are on the leading edge for modern data protection in enterprises today.”
