    HOPKINTON, Mass. - November 18, 2008 -

EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC), the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced the newest versions of the industry's broadest portfolio of data protection software. These new updates are part of integrated solutions that meet specific data protection requirements for analysis and reporting, backup for Microsoft and VMware virtual environments, data de-duplication and replication, helping customers slow data growth, reduce capacity and lower total cost of operations. Today's announcement reinforces EMC's leadership position in delivering disk-based backup and archiving solutions to a wide customer base (see separate announcement).

The products with new and expanded capabilities include:

    • EMC Data Protection Advisor The next-generation of EMC Backup Advisor, providing proactive analysis and reporting software that helps users make the right decisions at the right cost, faster. Now new features include support for VMware and EMC Celerra® unified storage systems, in addition to expanded support of EMC Avamar®, and Data Domain platforms.
    • EMC NetWorker® – New capabilities in EMC's enterprise backup and recovery software that provides cost-effective, comprehensive protection include being the first backup application to support Microsoft Hyper-V, strengthened management of VMware Infrastructure, and expanded support for EMC software and storage arrays, including EMC RecoverPoint, EMC HomeBase and EMC Symmetrix® TimeFinder®.
    • EMC Avamar The latest version of EMC's backup and recovery software featuring source-based data de-duplication that reduces storage and bandwidth requirements, provides a host of new capabilities that enhance security, offer additional capacity reporting, and simplify and streamline management.
    • EMC RecoverPoint EMC's solution for EMC and non-EMC storage arrays delivers greater efficiencies and protection options with new continuous data protection (CDP) capabilities for advanced replication configurations, support for VMware Site Recovery Manager, Microsoft cluster integration to improve application availability, and virtual provisioning support for EMC CLARiiON® CX4 networked storage systems.

Kronos Incorporated, a leading provider of workforce management solutions, has turned to EMC to consolidate its backup infrastructure. "Previously, we were using several different backup products and manually reporting on the success of each. The process could take anywhere from four to six hours and put a significant strain on our IT staff," said Michael Moran, information technology manager at Kronos. "EMC has helped us standardize our backup environment leveraging EMC NetWorker and an EMC Disk Library 4100. We also use EMC Data Protection Advisor to provide detailed analysis of our infrastructure in a matter of minutes. By consolidating our backup efforts using EMC solutions, we have a more holistic view of our infrastructure, allowing us to be more proactive in our data protection strategy and execution."

New EMC Data Protection Advisor — Expanding Analysis and Reporting Beyond Traditional Backup Environments to Further Drive Cost and Risk Reduction

Formerly EMC Backup Advisor, the re-branded EMC Data Protection Advisor (v5.0) software enables backup reporting, alerting, monitoring, and analysis of heterogeneous storage infrastructures. Customers can consolidate the collection, analysis and presentation of information across data protection environments, including backup components, domains and locations, allowing them to make the right decisions, at the right cost—faster. This allows customers to be proactive and cost-effective in their data protection strategies, versus using multiple point products that only report on specific applications located on disparate products.

With the new version, coverage is expanded, providing the benefits of faster decisions and improved cost reduction across more of the IT infrastructure. Using Virtual Center API's, data can be collected from VMware servers and hosted images, enabling tracking of performance, resource consumption, and data protection information, as well as movement of host images between systems. In addition, the software now includes support of EMC Celerra IP storage systems. Finally, the solution continues to update its support with the latest software versions of EMC NetWorker, EMC Avamar, Symantec PureDisk, Symantec BackupExec and storage platforms from Data Domain.

EMC NetWorker — New Capabilities for VMware and Microsoft Virtual Environments

EMC NetWorker (v7.5) continues to improve the centralized management of various backup functions, including virtual environments from VMware and Microsoft, providing a single, cost-effective solution for comprehensive protection. With new integration with VMware Virtual Center and new support of VMware VMotion and Distributed Resource Scheduler, NetWorker customers improve control while reducing risk and effort of VMware backups. In addition, the new NetWorker Module for Microsoft Applications provides the first backup support for Microsoft Hyper-V virtual environments. This is part of the industry's only unified backup of all major Microsoft Applications with Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)—a single price, model, installation and user experience for cost-effective protection of Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server, Data Protection Manager, Active Directory and Hyper-V. Finally, the latest version of EMC NetWorker has expanded its centralized management for current EMC storage solutions including EMC RecoverPoint Continuous Remote Replication, EMC Symmetrix® TimeFinder® and EMC HomeBase.

EMC Avamar — New Version Fortified With Reporting, Security, Reliability and Simplified Management Features

EMC continues to strengthen its data de-duplication features by adding new functionality to EMC Avamar. The latest EMC Avamar (v4.1) backup software offers enhanced reporting capabilities that help customers manage and monitor their backup infrastructures. New graphical server capacity trending and capacity extrapolation reports and advanced "health check" and "email home" alerts notify administrators of "capacity-full" and other conditions that help mitigate risk. In addition, Avamar now offers 256-bit AES encryption, vulnerability scanning, and certificate-based authentication to assure that backup data is secure whether at rest or in transit across the network. Finally, Avamar expands reliability features with power loss management and server auto-restart functionality to assure the smooth continued operation of the backup process.

New Version of EMC RecoverPoint Expands Recovery Point/Recovery Time Objectives, Drive Greater Efficiencies

The new capabilities of EMC RecoverPoint (v3.1) replication software lower user costs and reduce risk by enabling advanced replication configurations, non-disruptive upgrades, new support for Microsoft cluster server and EMC CLARiiON network storage systems. RecoverPoint's new "stretched continuous data protection (CDP)" capability adds synchronous data replication from the production site to a secondary site at a distance up to 30 kilometers away (more than 18 miles), enabling two-site limited-distance data protection with zero data loss, as well as three-site cascaded configurations by adding a continuous remote replication (CRR) link. Adding to previously announced Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server support, RecoverPoint CRR now integrates with Microsoft clustering for smoother failover of geographically dispersed Microsoft Windows Server cluster nodes. Finally, RecoverPoint can now replicate virtual provisioned LUNs on a CLARiiON CX4 system (in addition to previously announced virtual provisioning support on EMC Symmetrix DMX systems), ensuring that only the actual physical storage used is replicated, improving utilization of storage resources.

Mark Sorenson, EMC's Senior Vice President of Storage Software, said, "No one has as broad a data protection portfolio as EMC does. This year alone we've introduced more new products and more new features that reduce cost and risk than all of our competitors combined. Backup is one of the biggest challenges that our customers face and we work every day to help make backups easier to manage, non-disruptive, faster and more cost-effective. The new features introduced today, combined with a range of new products introduced at EMC World, represent the state-of-the-art in data protection technology. From management of traditional tape environments to the latest in data de-duplication of disk-based backup environments, EMC has the platforms, software and services that are helping thousands customers around the world protect their data."
